Covid19 & Colt

Rory workout May 2023

As a parent there is nothing like the level of fear you feel when your child is ill or injured.  It takes effort to get it under control so you can function and provide your child with the care they need.  I have felt fear on many occasions over the last 23 years; premature birth, breath-holding spells, appendicitis, sports injuries, falls, broken limbs, serious viral illness and bacterial infection.  Only twice has my fear for one of the boys overwhelmed my system.  The first time was when I was taken to Rory in recovery after his first brain surgery to remove cancer.  Each time I stepped closer to the bed I started to faint as I heard his moans of pain.  The second time was when I was taken into intensive care after Rory had surgery to remove the tumor from his jaw.  I had to take deep breaths and sit with my head between my knees until I had the fear under control.  I felt fear again yesterday.  Colt tested positive for covid.  He was running a fever, had a headache and sore throat and was listless.  It was a fight to get fluid and pain relief into him.  I know Covid19 is a mild viral illness for most children, and Colt is fit and healthy, but lightening strikes in the most unlikely places, as we understand full well, so I am hyper vigilant.  I am also very aware of the risk to Rory.

The weather is a constant consideration now Sean is contracting.  If it is wet and/or strong wind it is inefficient or unsafe to hunt or trap.  At the start of every week we do the work/boys planning juggle.  As a result I was able to see Rory in action at the Next Level Fitness gym with Dane this week.  It always impresses me, and makes me a bit anxious, to see Rory workout.  Attendance at the gym has made a huge difference to Rory’s physical recovery, even though he now struggles to stand and walk he is very strong.  The gym has also been good for our family as we have, one by one, joined and started working out.  This week Rory enjoyed a massage using the voucher we gave him for his 21st birthday.  I have spoken with him about doing this more often.  It is good non-medical therapy for his health and wellbeing.

Happy Mother’s Day to my mum Heather and Sean’s mum Sandy.  You are the hearts of our families.  Thank you for all you do for us.  We love you to the moon and back  xox  As Colt has Covid19 my Mother’s Day plans had to change.  We were hoping to help out on a planting project in South Taranaki but it will now be a quietish day in our community.  Such is the reality of life as a mum!
