Immortality  (Clare Harner)

Do not stand

By my grave, and weep.

I am not there,

I do not sleep –

I am the thousand winds that blow

I am the diamond glints on snow

I am sunlight on ripened grain,

I am the gentle, autumn rain.

As you awake with morning’s hush,

I am the swift, up-flinging rush

Of quiet birds in circling flight,

I am the day transcending night.

Do not stand

By my grave, and cry –

I am not there,

I did not die.

Today’s blog is dedicated to Taranaki lad Lenny Binsbergen, who tragically passed away this week from osteosarcoma, forever 21.  On Friday we attended Lenny’s service.  The slide show and speeches described and reiterated Lenny’s love for life; dare devil, skier, snow-boarder, skate-boarder, golfer, creator, son and brother.  There were so many images of him active outdoors, particularly in the mountains.  People described how Lenny refused to let cancer define him.  He endured treatment courageously with a positive attitude and empathy for others for 3.5 years with his family at this side.  They had clearly touched the lives of many people as the venue was full.  Tears flowed but there were also smiles and laughter.  Lenny was one out of the box.  As I listened to this poem I knew Lenny’s energy still existed in the world.  Something so powerful does not die.

To refill my cup today Colt and I walked the paper road from the Bridge to Somewhere, Aotuhia to the Whangamomona Pub with Eastern Taranaki Experience www.eastern-taranaki.co.nz/.  It was an enjoyable walk for 18.5kms alongside the Whangamomona river.  Highlights were ; the tunnels, the view down to the steep papa sided river, the sound of Toutouwai (NI robin) and the company of our fellow walkers.  Sean spent the day with Rory.  They went for a walk, enjoyed a mocha and picked up our Christmas tree.

This week Rory and Sean had a meeting with WITT tutor Jane re next year’s classes.  Rory has to switch his days of attendance to complete the other half of the Skills for Living course which is going to be challenging to organise.  Rory and Tash called in at Zeal Taranaki Youth Centre to explore volunteering opportunities.  Rory had a dermatology appointment, and an endocrinology appointment with Dr Sharma.  His weight remains stable but he is light.  She reviewed his blood test results and medication.  Rory has a follow up appointment at Waikato Hospital this month.  Rory met with Psychologist Andy.  I asked Andy to speak with Rory about Lenny’s passing.  I was in two minds about taking Rory to the service but he said he wanted to go and pay his respects.  It is hard to know how much he has been affected by Lenny’s passing but he coped very well on the day.  I had a phone call with case worker Jes from ACC.  There was a lot of discuss as there are a number of compartments of work, all at different stages.  It can be a bit overwhelming to manage but Jes is very supportive.  We are making progress in all areas in fits and starts.

Happy 23rd Birthday Sam.  It was nice to celebrate with you.  We love you today, tomorrow and always xox
